Facelift Surgery

A facelift is a surgery that treats sagging skin and deep tissues of the face and neck caused by aging or weight loss. The surgery tightens and repositions tissues and removes extra skin if needed, giving a natural and younger look.

Before Surgery

  • Stop smoking: at least 4 weeks before and after surgery.
  • Medications: follow your doctor’s advice on what to take or stop.
  • Fasting: do not eat or drink for 8 hours before surgery.
  • Support person: arrange for someone to stay with you the first 1–2 days.
  • Home prep: have soft foods ready (soup, yogurt) and extra pillows to keep your head elevated.

After Surgery

  • Recovery: most patients return to normal daily life in 3–4 weeks.
  • Swelling and bruising: normal and improves after 2–3 weeks.

Post-Operative Instructions

  1. Swelling and bruising: expected for 2–3 weeks, then improves.
  2. Sleeping: keep your head raised with extra pillows.
  3. Cold compresses: use as directed to reduce swelling.
  4. Medications: take as prescribed—don’t stop early.
  5. Compression band (face wrap):
    • Wear constantly for the first week (even during sleep).
    • After that, wear part of the day as advised.
  6. Drain tubes: sometimes placed and removed within 24–48 hours.
  7. Activity:
    • Avoid heavy lifting, bending, or intense exercise for 3 weeks.
    • Light walking is encouraged.
  8. Stitches: usually removed after 7–10 days.
  9. Scar care: keep clean, use ointments or silicone sheets later if advised.
  10. Sun protection: avoid direct sunlight and use sunscreen.
  11. No smoking/nicotine: delays healing and increases risks.
  12. Good nutrition: eat balanced meals with protein, vegetables, fruits, and drink plenty of water.
  13. Avoid strong facial expressions: no wide laughing or big mouth opening for the first weeks.
  14. Special instructions: follow any specific directions from your surgeon.
  15. When to call the doctor immediately:
  • Heavy bleeding
  • High fever
  • Unusual discharge or bad smell from the wound
